Earth Day No. 38 - The Summer of Love, Two.






The real Earth Day, the one that takes place on the Spring Equinox, carefully planned by a small group of true and stalwart environmentalists in 1969, continues. On Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 1:48 a. m. EDT (Equinox) a figure will step up to the Peace Bell at the United Nations and a sweet chime will ring out into the night, lingering for all gathered to hear. At the same moment across the world other bells will ring, a symphony of sounds that speak a long and patient dedication to “Peace, Justice, and Care of the Earth.”

The real Earth Day has been kept for 38 years without fail. The faux event, Oil Day, is surrounded by far more noise but more people every day are coming to understand the true meaning of that day in April. If that day had a motto it would be, “Profit, Power, and Exploitation of Earth.”

There was a time when caring about clean air and water united all of us. In 1967 when the Summer of Love bloomed in Berkeley, California, all Americans believed that they stood on the cusp of a time when we would naturally assure that the rivers to flow clean, all shared a common vision for unpolluted air, and war was obviously a problem to be ended. It was a future fervently hoped for by nearly all of us.

It did not happen. The appearance of controversy was carefully manufactured by the same people who now collude to assert ownership of the air we breathe and the water we drink; given the starkness of our future today the words that divide us fade in significance.

Liberal – Conservative – Republican – Democrat – Man – Woman – Black – White. They are just words.

All Americans need to examine how we arrived at this juncture in time. Each of us needs to take immediate action to get off the grids. It is the grids, installed by that ugly concatenation of government and corporations, that caused the problems and divided us. The people of greed need our lives and money to survive; you can stop them by climbing off the grids.


Take this simple yes – no test to find out just how entrenched you are in the grids.

• Do you pay a mortgage every month?

• Do you pay an electric bill every month?

• Do you pay to put gas in your automobile?

• Do you have car payments to make every month?

• Do you pay every month for cable television?

• Do you pay for your Internet access?

• Do you pay for your phone service?

• Do you pay taxes, not fees for essential services?

• Do you pay every month for the water you drink? Use to wash?

• Have you ever paid a traffic ticket?

• Do you pay for tags on your car?

• Do you believe politicians are telling you the truth?

• Do you believe that the media is unbiased and reports honestly and completely?

• Do you think that elections accurately reflect the votes cast?

• Do you know where the food in your refrigerator was grown?

• Was your food grown within just a few miles of your home?

• Do you know, for sure, that Monsanto had nothing to do with producing the food you eat?

• Do you take dietary supplements in hopes of being healthier?

• When you become ill, do you go to a physician?

• Do you take prescription drugs?

• Do you have investments in the stock market that you depend on for income?

• Are you dependent on a pension that is invested in the stock market?

• Do you have a credit card with an unpaid balance?

Count up your “YES” answers. If you answered 1 - 4 questions in the affirmative, you are on a grid, but you are close to being free; good for you. With 5--11, you are Grid Challenged; time to exit. If you scored 12--18, you are Grid Entrenched: you need serious help to extract yourself. Anywhere above 18, you are totally Grid Locked.

Doubtless, you think living this way is normal. Add up the amounts you pay every month just to survive: you will see that mere survival is consuming the bulk of your earnings. You probably have moments when you wonder if there is an exit. There is.

There are two things you need to know right now:

Your situation is not ‘normal.’ Throughout human history, most people have not had to pay money just to continue to live.

And you can change your situation, for yourself and for your children. At the same time, you can build a life that is filled with the things that bring solid community, real happiness, and the leisure to enjoy them. You can get off the Grids and be free to enjoy your life, to find those things you never had time for and which, on your current path, will never be yours.

Most of us work ceaselessly to have the time to do what we love. If you reduce the cost of just surviving, your life is effectively longer because you are spending it in ways that make you happy.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness...”

Happiness is getting off the Grids. Happiness is greeting your neighbors with delight and knowing you matter to them, that you are respected. Happiness is knowing you and your family are safe. Happiness is caring for others and feeling your own life extended through strengthened relationships. Happiness is having the time to make each moment worth remembering.

This can be your future.

You can wake up in a home that you know will be there for your great-grandchildren. It keeps you cool in the summer, warm in the winter, without effort or cost: it is designed right. This technology is available today. You get up and go out to your garden to pick berries for breakfast. They are natural anti-oxidants, the kind of food your ancestors took for granted, that kept your great-grandparents healthy. Much of your food you grow yourself or get from local sources. You can see it growing, so you know it is being done right. The food is delicious, it makes your mouth water and satisfies you: you do not hunger for sweets.

Once, you worked in an office building. Now, you own your own business, which you run out of your own home. You could have chosen any of a dozen things to do, but you picked the one that you find most satisfying. You earn less in money, and much more in satisfaction. Your kids are doing the same; the whole world is their school now. They mastered physics by the time they were 14 or so, and now they are taking time to decide what they want to do. No one you know is worried about money.

All the money is local. Your local ‘bank’ is something you can visit online, but you don’t have to give it much thought. You know who runs it, the woman who used to be your son’s 4th grade teacher. She handles that part time, when she is not teaching weaving. The Board meets occasionally, and you were on it for a while before you cycled off. It is simple, transparent, and therefore impossible to steal.

There is little theft now. Honesty is reinforced by practices, all common law, that make stealing unprofitable. There are no big concentrations of money, no easy way to use power to steal. Those who thought otherwise have found out that it would not work and that trying was not a good idea.

There are not many elections: your community handles matters in your local town meetings. There are no standing armies: the rest of the world has followed the example of the Second American Revolution. Everyone you know can explain the principles contained in the Constitution.


You are healthy; you stopped taking supplements years ago, after the Change. You have discovered the ways of healing that the Grids had worked to keep from you. Physicians earn less, but they now feel better about their craft because they are now assisting people to actually become healthy.

For you, the moment of change might have been when you discovered that the cancer that was killing your wife, could be cured. Or it may have been when they turned off your electricity. Or when your 19-year-old daughter came home from Iraq, the victim of rape that was ignored. She hanged herself from the tree where you had built her tree house back when she was 7. We all had that moment, one when we saw what was really happening.

None of us looked back.

Today, you love your life; you love waking up every morning because life today is exactly what nourishes your spirit and brings joy.

You are looking forward to being a grandfather. Your automobile uses no gasoline, and you know it is guaranteed to last a lifetime. That is what you expect from the world, quality in all things. The furniture in your home will last for generations. The former attorney down the street built that furniture in the shop you helped him set up. We all changed, and it was a good thing.

Welcome to the real America – Celebrate Earth Day and remember what matters.


It only sounds impossible. The means exist; individuals have solved all the problems and individuals are coming together to share. You will find those answers for yourself at the Summer of Love Two this coming Solstice in Berkeley, California.

Will the Light go on for Joseph Farah? Please God, we need a miracle !


Remember how Charlie Brown always fell for it when Lucy held the football? The “Oh Noooooo! You can't fall for that AGAIN!” moment occurred to me again this morning when I saw the Joseph Farah article about light bulbs. Of course, Farah is the one who makes money writing this kind of drivel.

It is simply amazing when one person can be wrong twice in the same article, especially having noted that the problem is, in his own words “command-and-control fascism.” Of course there is. So why does he continue to fall for it?


If there is a fascist agenda it behooves him to think the implications through, instead of launching into blather that so well serves those same CorporaState types, addicted multigenerationally to getting their greedy hands on our money.


Farah opines in his online ezine, “All of these innovations by government have one thing in common – as do all the other provisions of this hopelessly misguided piece of legislation. They are the result of panic sweeping over elected officials because of a mythical belief in man-made, catastrophic global warming – an idea totally unsupported, in fact, contradicted, by all good and sound science.”


Misguided? Actually, right on target. Panicked? Only if those elected types miss the gravy train. The CorporaState is getting what they paid such as Bush, Senior, Maurice Strong, Robert O. Anderson, and Ed Crane to deliver. What was delivered was false dichotomies. You know, if not this, that, when neither is true. Sounds science never enters into it. The cycle of warming and cooling to which Earth reacts is irrelevant. The pollution caused by corporate greed impacts us in more significant ways.


If you think the conflicts that now exist between groups, gay, straight, women, men, races, and on issues like the environment happened because of real issues then I have a bridge you should buy.


All such conflicts serve to distract us into fighting among ourselves when the issue is our God-given rights, not how government chops us up for corporate profit.


None of these is anything but clever manipulation. Since Farah used the issue of global warming, also known as the environment, I'll use that to make the point.


The environment is not now and never was a partisan issue. Those light bulbs we will not be able to use simply force us to enrich yet another corporation; none of those legislators pushing these laws think for a moment that this is anything but a way to squeeze a little more money out of us. They also listen to the noise level generated by the corporations; think tanks are cheap, in corporate terms, an outlay of funds that pays big dividends. The yammering types who are paid through various think tanks and organizations are made up of sincerely deluded and credulous individuals who can't think controlled by those whose 401Ks depend on making sure they don't.


The whole idea of carbon credits and the other controls asserted through the cover of environmentalism, even selling our water along with the right to pollute our air, was on the agenda very early on. They just needed time to get the pieces in place and train Gore.


Follow the money. This is not stupidity or oversight but the outcome of careful, long term planning, the kind corporations have been doing for generations.


In 1970 we all agreed we wanted clean air and water. Those speaking for 'environmentalism' today do so because, with professional foresight, those working for Big Oil and other related Grid Corporations saw how useful it would be to control the environmental movement. So they stole Earth Day. Earth Day, in case you are still living in delusion land, is in March on the Spring Equinox. Those who originated it continue to work for Peace, Justice and Care of the Earth; the corporatypes keep trying to get control of it but, so far, have failed on that one. That is the Earth Society, a group of now mostly elderly activists who were sincere and too trusting. Something you should understand.


The event you celebrate in April is Oil Day. Is the light on yet?


The miracle will be when the light goes on for Farah.

How the Secrets of the Exodus will save America


Scientist discovers process that produced the Manna rained down on the Chosen People during the Exodus.

Homer's Odyssey was treated as ancient fiction, bearing little or no relationship to the facts of ancient history until German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann rediscovered Troy using the text in 1871 and 1873. While the self-taught archaeologist was not accurate as to which of the several layers of remains actually dated to the time of the Iliad and Odyssey the Homeric tradition turned out to be dead right on the location. The Bible's accuracy has also been questioned. Such seemingly obviously invented stories as the parting of the Red Sea to allow God's Chosen People to escape Egypt and Manna falling from the sky to sustain them on their 40 year journey into what we now know as the land of Israel are usually poo-pooed, or explained as allegorical.


Most Americans today accept the Bible as a text that is more mythology than fact. As Dr. Sagan once said: “Outrageous claims require outrageous proof.” Many of the stories in the Bible seem simply impossible.


But the claim of a long time researcher on the science behind of the existence of Manna is changing that. This researcher, an astrophysicist with an impressive and unusual resume, has made his case with proofs that no one ever expected to see. The proofs include actual Manna and the equipment he used to produce it.


Also explained is the seven day interval for the Sabbath, the Pillar of Cloud, and the Pillars of Solomon. During our interview Franklin provided answers to several questions long asked about the role Moses played as the Israelites wandered in the wilderness.


The scientist, named August Franklin, not only says he can explain what Manna was, he produced the pearly white substance that possesses the characteristics ascribed to Manna. Many inferences are given in the Old Testament that associate Manna as Gold in a sacred and perfect white form. In the Bible the word “bdellium” is used to describe the appearance of Manna. Manna is described as, pearlescent and having the appearance of tiny grains - something like coriander seed. His explanation fits together with a logic that is compelling.


Interviewed for this article, Franklin relayed the points of his theory and produced the proof – first to be viewed in his hand, where the grains did indeed look like pearl coriander seeds with a heavy emphasis on the pearl, and then baked into a loaf of bread that was different than this reporter had ever tasted. As the loaf was consumed August Franklin spoke further.


“The Israelites had no name for the grains of material that fell from the sky that they then, on the orders of Moses, gathered to eat. The word, “manna,” actually means, “It is What is it?” for they had no name for it at the time.


Franklin went on to reiterate a few well known facts on the principals in the story. For instance, every school child knows that Moses, born to a Jewish mother, was found abandoned in the reeds of the Nile and adopted by a daughter of Pharaoh. As a child of the royal house Moses would have had access to knowledge that would have been denied to other Israelites. Egyptian science guarded by the priesthood and was well advanced from that of the Israelites, who were essentially still in a farm culture embedded into Egyptian culture as a slave class and the bakers, millers, tailors and all the stations that served the Egyptian ruling families.


As an adopted grandson of Pharaoh, Moses was automatically a high priest of Ammon. the word Ammon means ' the hidden.” The family of the pharaohs were considered to be semi deities themselves. He therefore had access to the ongoing work at the various temples and would have been trained in the work going on there and such things as scheduling. Purification and smelting of precious metals went on at various temples routinely and onsite at the desert mines and Moses would likely have known about those operations.


Having the privileges of the royal house, even as a minor member, it is actually astonishing that Moses evidently became a champion of Israelites, but the Bible says this happened and that Moses fled Egypt, taking up residence in the desert and marrying. He was living as shepherd when, according to the Bible, he encountered the Burning Bush that called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land, returning to Egypt to free them.


Franklin, who said he has exhaustively studied the Bible and all existing texts relating to the High Priests of Ammon, who were in charge of all work relating to gold, studied the Egyptians and Persian kings and the smelting technologies then in use. Fires in such facilities were stoked day and night to ensure that the heat reached the required temperature and to save fuel. The mines were in the desert and fuel was made from making charcoal from the local shrubs and plants. The clouds of smoke by day evidently reflected the glowing charcoal fires by night making the "pillar of cloud."


During the time of Ramses a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night was associated with gold and precious metals smelting operations at Mt. Sinai and the surrounding area. The Egyptians were in charge of the mining at Timna with a workforce of Negebites and Midianites at what would later be called the Pillars of Solomon.


Also according to the Bible, Exodus 3:1 - “Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.”


Moses had fled Egypt alone, according to the Bible, marrying the daughter of the Midian priest.

According to Franklin, “Manna is an ionic form of gold like it is found in stars. It is life giving and sustaining when eaten in a form that provides a metabolic pathway into the cells.” Franklin accounts for the production of Manna as a byproduct of the smelting of gold, saying, “Gold was vaporized during active smelting operations that were ongoing in the Sinai during the Exodus. Atoms of gold, when sent aloft, cool. Water molecules form around airborne particles to form raindrops that fall from the sky - like manna did. In a moisture laden weather pattern, Ionic gold particles will be brought out of the sky as a rain containing atomic gold particles from the vapor cloud.


If the air is infused with precious metal vapor in a dense cloud of vapor sent aloft the precondition of a fall of manna exists in the atmosphere. Depending on the saturation dew point which determines the lifting condensation level these elements will cool then fall as a milky rain in the late evening. This is consistent with the Exodus texts. In the morning sun, this milky dew will condense into small flakes and particles as the water evaporates.”


Sitting there listening to an astrophysicist and Transition metal chemist discuss the probably truth behind the words of the Bible while eating bread baked according to a recipe that has not been made for thousands of years is a mind altering experience. In a small gold saucer on the table were the grains of Manna.


Exodus 16:4 - “Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.”

Franklin continued, “So efficient was the Ramses II Egyptian operation that smelting furnaces burned round the clock, raising output and saving fuel. Instead of stoking new fires each morning, as had been done by earlier smiths. The Egyptians ran the furnaces at top temperatures for several days at a time. This early “oxygen injection” process was well known to the Israelites since they were the slaves operating the furnaces. And this is seen clearly in the tomb drawings of Pharaohs describing gold purification using stoking.”


A we talked, Franklin showed me illustrations from tomb drawings that proved his point. The Egyptians understood all aspects of smelting. These techniques were taught by the High Priests of Ammon. In one of these a bald Egyptian priest class is stoking an oxygen rich furnace, but the common worker slave class is stoking a reduction furnace.


Every 6 days, the smelters turned the furnaces off for cleaning and recharging. The following day there was no smelting pillar of clouds and no subsequent fall of “Manna” and this is addressed in the Exodus verses. The predictive abilities of Moses doubtless awed the recalcitrant Israelites.

Exodus 16: 25 - "Eat it today," Moses said, "because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. You will not find any of it on the ground today. 6 Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any."


Exodus 16:27 - “Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.”


Exodus 6:31 - “The house of Israel called the name of it Manna, and it was like coriander seed, white; and its taste was like wafers with honey.”

Exodus16:32 - Moses said, "This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded, 'Let an omer-full of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt."


An Omer is about a quart. Easy to collect at that time, but extremely expensive to recreate in the modern time since gold is running something like $760.00 per ounce.


Franklin went on to discuss the observational knowledge of the High Priests of Ammon, and most probably of Midian, who would have understood the currents of air that carried the byproducts of the foundry to predictable locations. In the Bible the role of the Midian priest who was Moses' father in law is ignored, though Moses shows him clear respect and withdraws with him, to a discrete distance after the Tribes have escaped Egypt and before their wanderings are well underway. Franklin smiled.

He suspects he knows what they discussed but declined to say what that was.


Pointing out the locations on a map, Franklin traced the probable pattern of air currents existing at the time. Where Gold was sent aloft in the smelting process, Manna Fell.


Timna' is in the southern Negev , Israel , north of Elat. Archaeologists since the first modern expedition in 1904 have identified remnants of ancient smelting operations at Timna', complete with crude furnaces and slag heaps, as being of the Egyptian pharaonic dynastic period of Ramses and later and periods of conquering Persian Kings.


In the Exodus, while at Mt. Sinai Israelites reportedly engaged in metallurgical activities, that infant nation casts gold, silver and bronze objects for the Tabernacle. So the site where Manna fell ought to have evidence of objects being cast "on-site," and some of these objects ought to be of a "religious" nature. The Hathor shrine at Timna possesses votive objects cast "on site" of armbands, rings, ear-rings and figurines, like a bronze snake, a ram and a phallic male idol cast in copper. The Timna area was sacred since Chalcolithic times as a occupation of that era underlies the Egyptian Hathor shrine.

During the 1904 expedition of Flinders Petrie there was a moment of discovery where they encountered an Egyptian Temple of Hathor with inscriptions of Ramses. The yellow sand around a number of little stone alters showed unmistakable evidence of burnt offerings as well. .

After Manna fell and dried, the Israelites made bread with it. That is what Franklin said, continuing, and that is backed up by the Bible.

Numbers 11: 8 - “The people went around gathering it, and then ground it in a handmill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into cakes. And it tasted like something made with olive oil.”

And after the Israelites left the cloud the Manna stopped falling.

Joshua 5:12 - “The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan .”

The Manna, eaten alone, is very sweet, not a characteristic you would ascribe to gold. Franklin said he had taken his time in designing the equipment used to verify what many will see as an outrageous claim.


He continued, “After 5 years of research, processing and testing, I have created this special form of gold in my laboratory. What was wondrous was that it matched the ancient Ancient Hebrew Alchemical process of the Essene. So the knowledge was not lost entirely, just hidden, like the temple of the hidden (ammon).


By very high temperature processes that duplicated the dissolution of gold crystals into individual atoms like in smelting I was able to duplicate the effect of discharged atomic gold vapor and its precipitation and recollection as a white powder. In X-Ray Diffraction Analysis, the transformed gold was no longer showing crystalline x-ray reflection frequencies and clearly proved that the required non metallic state had been attained. But this is an important point, if it cannot be identified as a metal, then deposits in the soils around these ancient sites will have it, but it will not show up in spectroscopy and be completely missed.


And it is white, very white after this process.” I nodded, rolling one of the grains between my fingers.


“Above is a picture of an quartz ignition boat full of Gold taken through the alchemical gas fixing process. I further fixed the ionic state to be highly excited, but not electrochemically reactive.

But after this transformation it exhibited a high degree of both electrostatic attraction among the particles but dielectric repulsion against fields brought in proximity. Clumps would form up as it dried but then tended to move away from my fingers. However by transforming gold into a state of high electrostatic potential, but into a state that can not produce electronic valence bonding gold can ‘nest’ in carbon rings, like those of sugar. The starches in bread are a perfect place to ‘net’ gold into a neutral charge region in the carbon ring and “nest.” And thus provide a reasonable chemical molecule to follow normal metabolic pathways in order to delivery Manna into the human body and into the cells.”

Asked if these insights had challenged his belief in God Franklin responded,


“I believe that the gods were real and had attained a state that has been described as immortal, but may instead have been a state of continued existence due to special foods. The Sumerian texts that Akkad used to create the Hebrew bible were in the first person narrative so I believe the Elohim lived on Earth and wrote those texts. And that they were privy to specially treated foods found originally in a very special garden called Eden . Clearly, Moses was by definition both a son of a Pharaoh before the Exodus, and a high priest of the Temple of Ammon as a Pharaoh's son.


The rabbinical tradition relates that God determined to appoint Bezaleel architect of the desert Tabernacle. God then asked Moses whether the choice was agreeable to him, and received the reply, "Lord, if he is acceptable to Thee, surely he must be so to me!"


Moses brought Bezaleel from the House of Judah with him and gold was smelted, melted and made into the Ark of the Covenant by Bezaleel. Moses instructed Bezaleel in the esoteric ways of metallurgy.


Continuing, Franklin said, “I believe that Moses understood the power of that knowledge and it helped him guide the Israelites through the wilderness by knowing where to take them.


Is it any real coincidence that a Pharaoh's son would take them to the gold smelting operations at the Temple of Hathor where a cloud of gold vapor would recondense into a life giving Manna as it rained from heaven at night and dried in the sun in the morning? No, Moses had a job to do, given to him by God, and he accomplished it.”


The question of the Manna has therefore been answered. What “it” is, is gold…..The gold of gods… the gold as found in the sun. This is the heart of the knowledge of the Essene, Temple of Ammon and the Elohim. Seeing and tasting is believing. The tour of the lab at Cal Tech, where much of Franklin's research took place, will be covered in my next article.


Franklin, who was a research scientist and engineer with the NASA program until his program was phased out in 1993, proudly claims Hebrew heritage through his grandmother, his mother's mother he assured me, and also descent through his mother from America's own Benjamin Franklin, is, like Franklin, open and eager to talk about his discoveries. Like Benjamin, this Franklin is also a Renaissance Man who himself baked what is arguably the first real Shewbread to be produced in over 3,000 years because it comes with Manna.


That bread, made with the gold of the gods, real Manna, can be obtained through Judah's Bakery which Franklin started to make the proof of his discovery readily available.


“It is the End Times predicted in the Bible great tribulations were to be visited on mankind. It would seem that these predictions are fairly accurate. We are seeing terrible wars and plagues. So maybe other things in the Bible are accurate, like Manna. ” Franklin grinned. “It is good to know that the Chosen People still are. If you visit again, I will show you the work I have done with Bdellium.”


It was an interview I, for one, will never forget. The irony of having a Pillsbury be the one who conducted the interview of the individual who revealed the truth about the ingredients of the most significant bread in history did not escape me.

April 22, 1970 – Oil Day: Wake up and smell the fumes.

- “We are astronauts, all of us. We ride a spaceship called Earth in its endless journey around the Sun. This ship of ours is blessed with life-support systems so ingenious that they are self-renewing, so massive that they can supply the needs of billions.”


But for centuries we have taken them for granted, considered their capacities limitless. At last we have begun to monitor the systems and the findings are deeply disturbing.”


Scientists and government officials of the United States and other countries agree that we are in trouble. Unless we stop abusing our vital life-support systems they will fail. We must maintain them or pay the penalty. The penalty is death.”



A successful take over of the then nascent environmental movement by big oil began during the months from late 1966 until the end of 1967. At that point in time the issues of clean water and accountability for those who pollute were non-partisan, the present partisan divisions did not exist. Clean air and water were things that everyone agreed were necessary; liability for polluting must be exacted. “If you pollute, you pay,” was the first point on the agenda intended for consideration at the 1972 Stockholm Conference for the Environment according to Helen Garland, an early activist. That agenda changed in the back halls of the United Nations before the conference was gaveled into order.


It was a change that alarmed and bewildered people like Garland, representative to the Environmental Movement at the UN in 1971. John McConnell, originator of the real Earth Day said, “the agenda of Peace, Justice and the care of Earth, were sidelined for something very different.” Howard Baker, Jr., a Republican Senator from Tennessee, headed the first Environmental Protection Agency. Clean air and water seemed as imminent as social justice.


The forces that changed our direction are one in the same, Big Oil.


The bottom line for oil companies was to ensure that their profits from the only thing they had to sell continued. In the last 30 years, that has come to trillions from those continued sales by Big Oil, today amounting to one quarter of the entire GNP for the entire globe. Additionally, oil companies have received from “US federal government energy subsidies and incentives over the past 50 years – $644 billion. It shows that the federal government has subsidized the energy industries – nuclear, coal, oil, natural gas, renewables – using different budget and off-budget funding techniques.” This is according to The International Journal of Global Energy Issues.


Money talks and motivates. The losses to Big Oil if the original agenda for the environment had been enacted would be literally incalculable. Ensuring that did not happen was not a conspiracy, it was simple corporate policy.


According to Helen Garland, one of the original surviving founders of both the Earth Society and its present CEO, the wording for the first reference to the conference on the subject in the records from the United National Library on the environment changes over the three year period from 1967 – 1969. In 1967 the subject is clearly, “Pollution.” The point is obviously the impact of human action on the earth in specific locations. The next year the wording has changed to, “Environment.” This term redirects the focus from both the liability and accountability for specific human action to a broad category with no specific focus. A year later it has changed again, the text becoming "Human Environment." This term bifurcates what is actually a closed system, dividing humanity from the Earth. To win you must divide your enemy. “The enemy” the oil companies confronted was very direction of humanity for a clean environment and social justice.


By 1972 the Environmental Movement, now firmly under the control of Big Oil, first by the careful reworking of the agenda and resulting laws and the hijacking of what had been intended to be the yearly focus of that movement, Earth Day, was complete.


The hijacking of Earth Day had been accomplished through an overt show of public relations muscle, powered with 4 million dollars fed into the hands of Dennis Hayes, a sallow undergraduate who got the name, “Earth Day” from John McConnell and the older generation of environmentalists that included Helen Garland and Margaret Mead.


The conception of one day to highlight the agenda of, “Peace, Justice, and care of the Earth,” had been carefully thought out to encapsulate the whole agenda for that movement. The moment chosen, the second of the Spring Equinox, marked the moment of time when the Earth shifted between summer and winter in its Southern and Northern Hemispheres. The term was first used when the idea was presented by McConnell to a few members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and other community leaders early October 1969 at a UN meeting.


Today, if you visit the site for the April 22nd Earth Day you will find much rhetoric but nothing that enables you to easily or inexpensively accomplish what those aware of the issues in the early 70s expected; the ability to get off the grid of energy dependence. The original idea of accountability is nowhere in sight.


Big Oil had found a useful tool with Richard Nixon. Nixon's tenure in office, January 1969 to August 9, 1974 overlays many of the events that so impacted the cited changes in the Environmental Movement. According to Garland Nixon assured environmentalists that clean air and water were priorities. Jimmy Carter, with a strong background in engineering and economics, was elected in 1976, and represented a problem for Big Oil. Big Oil removed him from office through the simple expedient of sharply increasing oil prices during the critical period of the election.


The original wording for the Clean Water Act, passed in 1967, is today unavailable as is the poll of Americans done by Senator Baker that was published but never distributed around 1968. According again to Helen Garland these laid down standards and expectations that were then rewritten by Maurice Strong, an ambitious oilman from Canada who moved into the United Nations through a series of introductions, first serving, from November 1970 until December 1972 as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. After a long and lucrative career at the United Nations Strong went on to involvement in the Food for Oil debacle and from there to Peace University in Puerto Rico, where he used that institution to train paramilitary. He is now reported to be working in China.


After the initial take over the work of vilifying the United Nations and environmentalism guaranteed that the chasms of distrust would reinforce the divides first forged among Americans in the early 70s. Those who did the work profited mightily, many finding careers in politics and nonprofits funded by Big Oil.


Today a new generation of environmentalists and innovators are taking stock and coming together to provide the means for Americans to get off the grids of dependence. John Sturbine, a businessman and investor, and others from that earlier movement, including Helen Garland, are founding what they call The Earth Project, intended to make off grid alternatives cheaply available. Included among those involved are a non-oil engine for automobiles, a technology for reducing the cost of energy in homes by one half and a boat design that also eliminates the use of petroleum.
